Namibia to host Botswana-Namibia Bi-National Commission

Namibia will host the second session of the Botswana-Namibia Bi-National Commission (BNC) from Monday to Thursday, the Presidency announced on Saturday.

President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah and Botswana’s president, Duma Boko, will co-chair the Heads of State Summit next Thursday.

The inaugural session of the BNC was held in Gaborone in 2022.

The programme will begin with a senior officials’ meeting from Monday to Wednesday next week, co-chaired by Namibia’s executive director of international relations, Ndiitah Nghipondoka-Robiati, and Botswana’s permanent secretary of international relations, Thuso Ramodimoosi.

The ministerial session will follow on Thursday, led by Namibia’s minister of international relations and trade, Selma Ashipala-Musavyi, and her Botswana counterpart, Phenyo Butale.

Established in 2021, the BNC replaced the Joint Commission on Cooperation and the Joint Permanent Commission on Security and Defence.

It serves as a high-level mechanism to deepen bilateral cooperation.

The upcoming session will review progress in diplomatic, legal, economic, social, defence and security cooperation, while also exploring new areas of collaboration.

“It will also provide a platform to explore new areas of collaboration and exchange views on regional and multilateral issues of mutual interest,” the Presidency’s statement reads.

Several agreements are expected to be signed.
