Namibia targets value addition and regional logistics

Namibia is leveraging its infrastructure and democratic stability to drive industrial growth and mineral development, positioning the country as a primary logistics hub for the southern African region and international markets.

Peter Shivute, the executive for micro, small and medium enterprise development and export promotion at the Namibia Investment Promotion and Development Board (NIPDB), shared these insights during the Namibia country showcase at the Mining Indaba in Cape Town, South Africa, on Wednesday.

He said the national development strategy is anchored in economic transformation, human development and community resilience.

“Mining is a precursor and a foundation to our economic development,” Shivute said.

He noted that Namibia serves as a strategic gateway for the subcontinent, supported by an extensive logistics network and the Walvis Bay Corridor.

“We have some of the best logistics networks in Africa. It is not just a gateway for extraction out of the subcontinent, but also into it,” he said.

The session also highlighted Namibia’s energy potential, with Shivute pointing to high radiation levels for solar power generation and hydrocarbon discoveries in the Orange Basin.

“The energy story in Namibia is a mining story. We are expecting some of the best gross domestic product growth numbers globally in the next five years,” Shivute said.

He emphasised the government’s commitment to local processing and the beneficiation of minerals to retain greater value within the country.

“It is something we really want to stress. National and local and international bank financing is streamlined,” he said.

Shivute said Namibia remains a player on the global stage, with several local projects listed on stock exchanges in Australia, London and Toronto.

“We are a global player. It is a nice environment,” he said.
