Namibia Stock Exchange scoops top award

The Namibian Stock Exchange (NSX) has been awarded the Best Stock Exchange Management (Africa) for 2023 accolade.

According to a statement issued the NSX business administration assistant Justina Nghinamanhu, the bourse was rewarded for positioning itself as a stable and efficient alternative market for addressing regional issuer needs through its established strategic partnership with the Johannesburg Stock Exchange in neighbouring South Africa.

“It was also recognised for offering diversified products that benefit the investing public, and education listed companies on applicable governance requirements through the development of the corporate governance code for Namibia and aims to shape the next generation of investors through mock trading challenges for students,” noted the statement.

“This award reaffirms our mission to enable, develop and deepen capital markets in Namibia as we continue to contribute towards the growth and diversification of the country’s economy,” noted the NSX under the guidance of chief executive Tiaan Bazuin.

The NSX is the only stock exchange in Namibia. It is based in Windhoek and is one of the largest stock exchanges on the African continent.

The NSX is open on weekdays and trades continuously from 09h00 to 17h00, excluding public holidays.

The NSX operates under a licence from the Namibian non-banking financial regulator the Namibia Financial Institutions Supervisory Authority (Namfisa) and is regulated by the Stock Exchanges Control Act (1985 and 1992).

The first stock exchange in Namibia was founded at Lüderitz and was then known as the Lüderitz Stock Exchange. It opened at the start of the 1900s as a result of the diamond rush which brought hundreds of prospectors to the desert who then built settlements in the area. – matthew@namibian.com.na
