The Namibia Football Premier League gets underway this weekend with several matches throughout Namibia. File photo

The Namibian football season finally starts this weekend with several matches taking place throughout the country. 

In the opening match of the season FC Ongos take on Unam at the Independence Stadium tonight, while defending champions African Stars open their campaign against Khomas Nampol at the same venue on Sunday. 

Football fans can also look forward to matches at Oshakati, Walvis Bay, Okahandja and Otjiwarongo as the first round gets underway. 

The MTC Volleyball National League Final takes place in Swakopmund, while the NDTC Futsal Premier League also reaches its conclusion at the Windhoek Showgrounds Arena on Saturday. 

In rugby, the final leg of the Ongos Valley Sevens Tournament takes place at the Hage Geingob National Rugby Stadium, while the Namibian club cricket league commenced last weekend and continues with matches in various leagues this weekend. In the T20 Premier League, the defending champions Wanderers take on CCD, while WHS Old Boys take on United. 

There’s also youth sport with the MTC Hopsol Youth Football finals taking place at the Jan Mohr field while the Pupkewitz Schools Gala will be held at the Olympia Swimming Pool.

In international sport the main focus will be on the Spanish La Liga when arch-rivals Real Madrid and Barcelona meet in El Clasico on Sunday afternoon.
