Namibia needs N$285 billion to meet climate goals

Namibia requires about N$285 billion to implement its climate action commitments under the Paris Agreement.

The agreement is an international treaty on climate change, adopted by 195 Parties at the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP21) in Paris, France, on 12 December 2015.

Speaking at the 30th Conference of the Parties (COP30) in Belém, Brazil, president Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah reaffirmed Namibia’s commitment to tackling climate change through its updated nationally determined contributions (NDCs).

The NDCs outline 17 mitigation measures and 34 adaptation actions across key sectors, including energy, agriculture, and transport.

Collectively, these efforts are expected to cut an estimated 11.9 million tonnes of carbon dioxide.

Namibia’s plan aims to reduce emissions while adapting to climate impacts and promoting a greener, more resilient economy.

To meet this goal, Namibia estimates a funding requirement of US$15 billion (about N$285 billion), of which US$13 billion (around N$247 billion) will rely on international support.

Nandi-Ndaitwah urged developed nations and global financial institutions to honour their commitments to climate financing and make resources more accessible.

“Climate finance should move beyond pledges and be accessible directly to developing countries,” Nandi-Ndaitwah said.

She said the loss and damage fund should complement new global finance goals for a fairer, more resilient world.
