Namibia marks 25 years of women, peace and security leadership

Opening remarks by Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, president of the Republic of Namibia, at the Annual Women, Peace and Security Ministerial Focal Points Network, New York, 24 September 2025

When Namibia initiated Resolution 1325 in the Security Council, we could not have imagined the global Women, Peace, and Security agenda it would generate. Its growth underscores both its relevance and our collective commitment.

Namibia thanks Japan and Norway for co-chairing the Focal Points Network this year, and all members for contributions to the Tokyo and Oslo meetings. As we mark the 25th anniversary of Resolution 1325, Namibia is reviewing its first Women, Peace and Security National Action Plan and preparing a stronger second one.

Our first plan addressed disaster risk management, climate change, and cybersecurity. The second will expand community-led solutions, engage the private sector, and ensure inclusive participation through nationwide stakeholder mapping with government, civil society, traditional leaders, youth, and community representatives.

We will also:

• Continue promoting Women, Peace and Security mainstreaming at Southern African Development Community and African Union levels.
  
• Host the silver anniversary of Resolution 1325 in Windhoek this October, alongside a New York event, under the theme ‘25 Years of 1325: Honouring the Legacy and Advancing the Women, Peace and Security Agenda’.
  
• Convene an intergenerational dialogue to strengthen youth inclusion.
  
• Enhance capacity building for mediation, peacekeeping, and peace support operations through the Namibia International Women’s Peace Centre.
  

Namibia remains committed to sustaining the Women, Peace and Security agenda beyond the 25-year mark, ensuring it delivers tangible change for women, particularly those in conflict situations. Let us all share our commitments and keep the spirit of Resolution 1325 alive.
