MVA Fund data reveals crash trends
Analysis of the Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA) Fund’s annual reports reveals predictable patterns in road accidents.
On average, between 2013/14 and 2022/23, crashes were lowest in January and February.
This aligns with fuel consumption trends, which show that January and February recorded the lowest fuel consumption nearly every year over the past 15 years (except for 2020, when a lockdown was enforced in response to Covid-19).
February also has the lowest number of injuries per crash, at 1.6, as well as the lowest fatality rate, at 13.9%.
December unsurprisingly records the highest number of accidents and injuries per crash, and the highest fatality rate.
This is driven by a greater number of Namibians embarking on long-distance travel, such as to the coast, increased carpooling and more dangerous driving behaviour, like driving under the influence.
