The Ministry of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sports, Arts and Culture successfully hosted the African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region 5 Council of Ministers Ordinary Meeting, held from 4–5 December 2025 in Swakopmund.
The high-level meeting brought together ministers responsible for sport from the ten member states of Region 5 to review key achievements, assess regional performance, and adopt strategic directives aimed at strengthening sports development, youth leadership, capacity building and institutional growth across Southern Africa.
The gathering reflected the collective commitment of member states to empowering young people through sport, strengthening governance, and advancing regional cooperation.
During the two-day meeting, the Council of Ministers adopted several progressive resolutions and policy directives designed to enhance operational efficiency, inclusivity, and long-term impact within the region.
Among the key resolutions adopted are, council resolved that a country scorecard be introduced to map and assess the performance of Member States in implementing approved regional programmes and activities.
Member states bidding to host, or currently hosting, major sport events are required to formally inform the council through the secretariat.
In addition member states were encouraged to second qualified and competent staff to the AUSC Region 5 secretariat to enhance institutional capacity and accelerate programme delivery.
The council noted, with appreciation, Namibia’s presentation on the successful hosting of the 2024 Games, particularly commending the government’s investment and the goodwill demonstrated by national leadership in delivering a highly impactful event.
Council further acknowledged the importance of Namibia expediting the clearance of any outstanding obligations to service providers and suppliers, as part of upholding the credibility of both the host country and the AUSC Region 5 Games.
The Ministry remains dedicated to advancing youth development and strengthening regional cooperation through sport, and looks forward to ongoing collaboration with Member States, partners, and stakeholders.
