KINTELE – Namibia ended seventh overall out of 50 countries at the All Africa Games (AAG) which closed in Brazzaville, Republic of Congo on Saturday.
Namibia won five gold medals, four silvers and six bronze. All gold medals were won by Namibia’s athletes with disabilities.
At the 2011 AAG held in Maputo, Mozambique, Namibia won seven medals – one gold, one silver and five bronze.
Egypt are overall winners of the 2015 AAG with 235 medals of which 92 were gold, followed by Nigeria with 175 medals (59 gold); South Africa third with 129 medals (44 gold); Algeria fourth with 140 medals (43 gold); Tunisia fifth with 103 medals (34 gold) and Senegal sixth with 38 medals (eight gold).
Mauritius, Cameroon and Congo collected the same number of gold medals as Namibia but were placed lower than Namibia after they won fewer silver medals.
Mauritius occupy eighth place with 12 medals (five gold, three silver and four bronze), while Cameroon collected 20 medals (five gold, two silver and 13 bronze).
The home nation, the Republic of Congo ended 10th with 19 medals (five gold, two silver and 12 bronze).
A team of 79 Namibian athletes competed in nine sports codes, including sports for the disabled, from 4 to 19 September 2015.
TRACK AND FIELD FOR ATHLETES WITH DISABILITIES:
Ananias Shikongo won three gold medals in the T11 100m, 200m and 400m.
Johannes Nambala won one gold in the T13 400m, and Johanna Benson one gold in the T37 100m.
Lahja Ishitile finished third in the T11 200m race, earning her a bronze medal.
TRACK AND FIELD FOR ABLE-BODIED ATHLETES:
Namibia’s 4X100 relay team of Jesse Uri-Khob, Hitjivirue Kaanjuka, Even Tjiviju and Dantago Gurirab won silver, while Tjipekapora Herunga won bronze in 400m and Lilanne Klaasman bronze in 400m hurdles.
SWIMMING
Daniela Lindemeier won three bronze medals in 100m breaststroke, 200m breaststroke and 50m breaststroke.
BOXING
Mathias Hamunyela and Junius Jonas won two silver medals in the light flyweight 49kg category and light welterweight (64 kg) category respectively.
CYCLING
The men’s team consisted of Dan Craven, Costa Seibeb, Michael Pretorius, Johannes Hamunyela, Xavier Papo and Gerhard Mans.
In the team event, the male team of Craven, Hamunyela, Pretorius and Papo ended 13th.
The female team of Vera Adrian, Michelle Vorster, Irene Steyn and Chelna Neethling ended fourth overall.
TABLE TENNIS
Namibia’s table tennis players were eliminated in the group stages of the singles and team events.
TENNIS
Mariska Kuschke and Jessica Riedel reached the quarterfinals of the tournament but could not book semi-final spots.
KARATE
All Namibian karateka were knocked out of the competition in the first stage of the competition. In the team event, Namibia was eliminated in its first match by Senegal.
