Namibia committed to continuing bilateral relations – Nandi-Ndaitwah

President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah says despite the loss of two presidents, Namibia remains united and committed to continuing its bilateral relations.

Speaking during a courtesy visit by the deputy prime minister of Russia and Presidential Plenipotentiary Envoy to the Far Eastern Federal District, Yury Trutnev, at State House on Tuesday, Nandi-Ndaitwah said the two nations share a long history and will, therefore, continue to strengthen cooperation.

In March 2024, Russia hosted the 10th anniversary meeting of the Russia-Namibia Intergovernmental Commission on Trade and Economic Cooperation, where Trutnev and the then minister of international relations and cooperation, Peya Mushelenga, discussed ways of enhancing cooperation in agriculture, space, fishing, mining, energy, tourism, education, healthcare and trade.

“We know there are a lot of changes but as part of life there must be changes, so we just have to face them… I know from the work of the intergovernmental commission there is a lot of work that needs to be done,” said the president.

On his part, Trutnev highlighted that the longstanding cooperation has resulted in a doubling of trade turnover; however, there is still potential for growth.

“The intergovernmental commission is aimed at strengthening our countries’ bilateral cooperations. Our trade has doubled, but there is still room for development. Considering that you are statutory to the Russian Federation, I am sure that the friendship between our countries will develop in the future and assure that I will do from my side everything that is possible for reaching this,” he said.
