Namibia and China marked 35 years of diplomatic relations on Friday, celebrating a partnership rooted in mutual respect and shared aspirations.
In a speech read on her behalf at the celebrations, minister of international relations and trade Selma Ashipala-Musavyi highlights the strength of the bilateral relationship since its establishment in 1990, saying the two nations share a relationship rooted in solidarity, mutual respect and shared aspirations.
She also reflects on the broad cooperation between the two countries, from trade and infrastructure to education and public health, and underscores China’s crucial support in Namibia’s sustainable development, including projects like the Rosh Pinah Solar Power Plant.
Ashipala-Musavyi reaffirms Namibia’s commitment to advancing China’s comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership, focusing on economic growth, green energy and technology.
On his part, Chinese ambassador to Namibia, Zhao Weiping echoes the minister’s sentiments, praising the enduring friendship between the nations.
“Over the past 35 years, with the strong support of successive governments and leaders of both countries, China-Namibia relations have maintained strong momentum, becoming a model of brotherly relationship among developing countries,” he says.
The partnership has flourished through high-level exchanges, with significant diplomatic visits in recent months, including Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi’s visit to Namibia and minister Ashipala-Musavyi’s participation in the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation Ministerial Meeting in China.
Zhao expresses confidence in further collaboration, stating, “We are full of confidence in the future of China-Namibia relations and ready to work together to push forward our bilateral relations for even greater development.”
