Namibia Breweries Limited (NBL) this week trained representatives from several major companies in Windhoek on promoting responsible and moderate alcohol consumption among the workforce.
The half-day training brought together 12 human resource and safety managers from companies, including Bokomo Namibia, Namib Mills, Rosh Pinah Zinc and Cymot, all of which form part of the Northern Industry Forum.
The initiative aims to help companies address alcohol misuse and strengthen wellness and safety programmes within their organisations.
NBL manager Franklin Angermund, who facilitated the training, said alcohol-related disruption at work should be treated as a serious operational risk.
“It is no longer only a wellness issue, it is an operational risk with both operational and personal injury costs,” he said.
He said issues related to alcohol consumption often begin as individual problems, but can quickly affect teams and business operations if left unaddressed.
NBL said the training covered responsible and moderate alcohol consumption, the effects of alcohol misuse and situations in which alcohol should be avoided.
Angermund said NBL remains committed to raising awareness of responsible alcohol consumption as part of its broader sustainability and wellness initiatives.
“Breathalyser testing upon staff and visitors entering and exiting the premises is widely practised to ensure safety around heavy machinery, and the goal is zero positive tests,” he said.
Cymot human capital manager Sabrina Jacobs described the training as valuable and informative.
“The insights and guidance shared will greatly support our efforts to strengthen awareness around responsible consumption within our company,” she said.
She said addressing alcohol misuse is not only a workplace concern, but also a broader national issue that requires cooperation between companies and communities.
