NAMIBIA’s national men’s hockey team stepped up their preparations for the Indoor Hockey World Cup, with an official 4-1 victory against the United States in a warm-up match on Monday.
Namibia started on the offensive, with Fagan Hansen opening their account from a short corner, while a field goal by Dylan Finch put them 2-0 up by the end of the first quarter. The USA managed to keep Namibia at bay during the second quarter, but Namibia stepped up the tempo in the third with two more field goals by Finch and Liam Hermanus, before the USA opened their account.
The score remained the same in the final quarter, with Namibia of-ficially winning the match 4-1. Both sides, however, agreed to play an unofficial fifth quarter, during which Namibian coach Trevor Cormack substituted their goalie with an extra field player. The USA made a strong comeback, scoring three more goals, but Namibia managed to hold on for an ‘unofficial’ 5-4 victory.
Namibia will play two more warm-up matches against Australia this afternoon, and against Argen-tina tomorrow morning.
Namibia’s women’s team, mean while, arrived in South Africa yesterday after wrapping up their preparations in The Netherlands where they played warm-up match-es against several leading clubs and the national Dutch side.
The Indoor World Cup gets un-derway at the Heartfelt Arena in Pretoria, South Africa, on Sunday, with Namibia’s men opening their campaign against The Netherlands, while Namibia’s women take on Kazakhstan.
Namibia’s men have been drawn in Pool A alongside Austria, The Netherlands, Belgium, Kazakhstan and New Zealand, while Namibia’s women will compete in Pool B along with Belgium, Canada, the Czech Republic, Kazakhstan and Ukraine.
