Namdeb, union strike historic deal

NAMDEB and the Mineworkers Union of Namibia signed a historic three-year substantive wage agreement that will unlock new housing opportunities for the parties involved at the town of Oranjemund.

This agreement enables employees to purchase houses at Oranjemund at reduced prices, and also offers financial assistance to employees who wish to own properties elsewhere in Namibia.

The agreement demonstrated both Namdeb’s and the Mineworkers Union of Namibia (MUN)’s commitment to the national imperatives of housing as a priority area, while serving as a tool for creating sustainable communities.

The total value of the housing benefits which will be provided by Namdeb amounts to over N$100 million, and is specifically tailored to enable first-time home ownership for low-income employees.

Namdeb chief executive officer Riaan Burger said: “This win-win agreement demonstrates our commitment to supporting the national development goals, and in particular our ongoing commitment to the economic diversification of the town of Oranjemund.

“In this regard, I would like to acknowledge our shareholders and stakeholders for the supporting role they played in assisting the parties to reach this milestone.”

Meanwhile, MUN branch chairman Shavuka Mbidhi added that as a union, they will continue to work hard to ensure that their members improve their living conditions and gain access to affordable housing.

“In addition, we will continue to seek further job creation opportunities, and will work with stakeholders and partners to develop economic prosperity,” he noted.

The agreement will come into effect immediately, and will expire in 2022.
