Nam women lose at inline hockey champs

THE Namibian inline hockey team lost their second match 5-1 against Canada at the FIRS Ladies World Inline Hockey Championships in the United States.

Canada started off with a bang, and opened the score board only two minutes into the game. The Namibians played a defensive game and tried to keep the Canadians from having shooting opportunities.Canada managed another goal at five minutes into the first period followed by their third goal just a minute and half later.With Canada leading 3-0, all expected a runaway score and they put another goal into the net at 10 minutes into the first period.The rest of the half kept the Namibian defenders on their toes, leading to a half time score of 4-0.The second period started with the Namibians fighting back with a vengeance and never-say-die attitude.Nine minutes into the second period, Julika Pahl scored Namibia’s first goal assisted by Stefanie Gantz.With two penalties in the second period against Namibia, the team played three on four but kept the Canadians from scoring until the 11th minute of the second period, when Jackie Jerrel from Canada put in their 5th goal.Namibia did not give up, however, and maintained the scoreline at 5-1 as everyone expected a runaway score by Canada.Spectators, officials and other squads alike were impressed by the performance of both teams.Namibia were complimented as being the best opponents Canada had faced in a long time.Yesterday, Namibia were expected to face the Czech Republic and France.The women’s team were expected to wear black armbands in memory of Quintin and Sonja Kotze’s youngest daughter, Jessica, who passed away on Saturday.In their first match on Monday, the Namibian women’s team lost 3-1 to Finland.Finland opened the scoreboard at six minutes into the first period converting a power play goal.The first half was dominated by the Namibians who had most of the puck possession but just could not put points on the scoreboard.Namibia were also given three penalties during the first period, compared to one for Finland.The second period started with Finland leading 1-0.Five minutes into the second period, Namibia corrected the scoreboard by adding their first point scored by Mari Schmidt, assisted by Danielle Schmidt.The score was tied at one all for a longer period.The Namibian team put up a good fight, but after 16 minutes into the second period, Finland scored their second goal, followed by another one two minutes later.Before the Finnish game, the Namibians women’s team had several friendly matches and the results were as follows: Namibia 1-0 Bachian Lakers.Goal scored by Julika Pahl.Namibia 2-0 Duesseldorf Rams.Both goals by Nadia Schmidt Namibia 2-1 Langenfeld Devils.Goals by Nadia Schmidt and Julika Pahl.These scores put the Namibian women’s side into first place at the Devils Open Tournament.The Namibians played a defensive game and tried to keep the Canadians from having shooting opportunities.Canada managed another goal at five minutes into the first period followed by their third goal just a minute and half later.With Canada leading 3-0, all expected a runaway score and they put another goal into the net at 10 minutes into the first period.
