Nam TV – Hip Hop promoters trailblazing the music industry

LATELY, social networks have been abuzz with talk of Nam-TV, Namibia’s newest Hip Hop promoters who showcase underground artists through ‘zone sessions’, acoustic sessions and cyphers on YouTube.

• NETUMBO NEKOMBA

Nam-TV, short for Notorious Artist Mash up-TV, exchanges the professional setting for a more relaxed one and allows the general public to get a glimpse of artists performing at their realest, mistakes and all. Popular artists such as Kanibal, Jericho, S-Man and many others have already done collaborations and here’s the good news: you can too and sessions are free.

The group consists of Jose Carlos Amutenya, (the producer), Hafeni Motsi (the administrator) and Roger Gabohumise (the cameraman).

“The concept of Nam-TV kind of started when we saw a couple of rappers we knew battling it out in our hood.

Luckily, they knew other rappers who knew other rappers and it went on until we decided to film everything,” Roger told The Namibian in an interview.

“We use our own money, bought our own cameras and as of now, we’re trying to get sponsors.”

Although Nam-TV was only formed a month ago, the group already has an impressive number of videos and views available on their YouTube page and Hip Hop artists from all corners of Windhoek are encouraged to get into contact with them.

“Our aim is to expose artists and educate them as well,” said Jose when asked the purpose of the group.

“The projects we plan to do are huge. Even people from the States are asking us to record.”

Indeed, the Namibian Hip Hop industry has been on the down low for quite some time now and with Nam-TV’s presence, perhaps loyal fans can finally look forward to a year full of entertainment, shows and good music.

As for now, Nam-TV is based in Windhoek but you may organise a session and they will do the rest. Catch the group on YouTube (Namtv Namibia), Facebook (Nam-TV) or e-mail them at namtv.com@gmail.com.
