Nam chairs World Bank body

NAMIBIA has been elected to chair the Small States Forum – a World Bank body which meets yearly on the sidelines of the meetings of the Bretton Woods Institutions of World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

According to a statement released yesterday, the Director General of the National Planning Commission (NPC), Helmut Angula, is one of the governors of the World Bank while Finance Minister Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila is an IMF governor. Both were in Washington last week to attend the annual meetings of the World Bank and IMF.The chairmanship rotates regionally among geographical regions.For the next two years, it will be Africa’s turn to chair the forum.On October 21, Namibia was nominated and unanimously elected to the chair, taking over from Vanuatu which chaired on behalf of the Pacific region.Angula said there were no cost implications for the country.Both were in Washington last week to attend the annual meetings of the World Bank and IMF.The chairmanship rotates regionally among geographical regions.For the next two years, it will be Africa’s turn to chair the forum.On October 21, Namibia was nominated and unanimously elected to the chair, taking over from Vanuatu which chaired on behalf of the Pacific region.Angula said there were no cost implications for the country.
