At the dawn of Namibia’s 30th independence anniversary, what better way to celebrate than to invite all visual artists in Namibia to create artworks that speak to where we are as a nation today?
The National Art Gallery (NAGN) requests artists to submit arts and crafts which focus on pre- and post-independence Namibia.
These works will then be submitted for exhibit to the Museum of African Art in Belgrade, Serbia, in March 2020, while a selection of the work will also be on show at the NAGN.
“As part of celebrating our 30th independence celebration, and in remembrance of all our artists who through their creativity could voice a message of hope for an independent Namibia, we thought it befitting to have an exhibition that acknowledges the good work that was done, and look forward to what the next couple of years have to offer the Namibian nation. In their submissions, artists are encouraged to reflect on issues such as: The future of Namibian art and the nation at large, the role of the artist in society and the past 30 years,” reads a statement from the NAGN.
The submission process is as follows: Maximum three artworks, with an artist’s statement of not less than 150 words, to be submitted at the NAGN along with a completed entry form (including price, if work is for sale). The artworks that will be going to Serbia should be not more than 20kg in weight and not more than 1,5m x 1m in size.
There are restrictions regarding what can be transported to Serbia. Larger works will be exhibited in Namibia. Individual artists or collaborations are welcome. All submissions are subject to a selection by a panel. Those entering must be older than 18 and must be a Namibian citizen, artist domicile in Namibia or permanent resident of Namibia. The deadline for submission is 24 January 2020 at 17h00. Visit nagn.org.na to apply online.
