A COMPANY that on Wednesday found itself the target of a demonstration over the retrenchment of 91 employees has charged that a worker who refused to take part in the protest was beaten up by a unionist.

Marcel Lamprecht, General Manager of Commercial Investment Corporation (CIC), which says it is restructuring in order to “return to its core business”, claimed a worker was assaulted by the chairman of the shop stewards of the Namibian Food and Allied Workers’ Union (Nafau). “The employee is …laying criminal charges against the shop steward, and management will also follow the correct disciplinary procedures in this regard,” Lamprecht said in a statement yesterday.”It has also come to the attention of management that Nafau has not informed its members at CIC with regard to what happened during the restructuring process and as a result most are ill-informed in this regard.”Lamprecht said the restructuring was being conducted in strict accordance with the Labour Act and that the Labour Commissioner had been kept abreast of developments.”The employee is …laying criminal charges against the shop steward, and management will also follow the correct disciplinary procedures in this regard,” Lamprecht said in a statement yesterday.”It has also come to the attention of management that Nafau has not informed its members at CIC with regard to what happened during the restructuring process and as a result most are ill-informed in this regard.”Lamprecht said the restructuring was being conducted in strict accordance with the Labour Act and that the Labour Commissioner had been kept abreast of developments.
