NA to discuss flood

THE National Assembly is expected to discuss the causes of the latest Mariental flood next week.At the request of the Republican Party’s Henk Mudge, Parliament will be expected to decide whether a commission of inquiry should be launched.

Mudge said yesterday that even though President Hifikepunye Pohamba had visited the town, he still felt it was necessary that the House discuss possible negligence on the part of NamWater officials, and why nothing had been done since the 2000 floods to prevent a repeat. He said the House had to discuss whether NamWater should be required to discharge water constantly as the dam fills up to prevent the town from being flooded again.Mudge’s motion comes a day after the Monitor Action Group’s Jurie Viljoen and the DTA’s Phillemon Moongo requested the Agriculture Minister to provide feedback on the causes of flooding at Mariental.
