N$300m boost for conservation efforts

THE Kavango-Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area (Kaza-TFCA) has received nearly N$300 million from the Dutch Postcode Lottery through its Lottery Dream Fund project.

At a gala event held on 4 March 2020 in Amsterdam in the Netherlands, the 16,9 million euro Dream Fund grant was awarded to the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), Peace Parks Foundation and African Parks.

The Dutch Postcode Lottery is the biggest charity lottery in the Netherlands founded in 1989 by a marketing agency that sets up and runs charity lotteries.

A statement made available to the media on Friday by the WWF Windhoek office said the three leading not-for-profit conservation organisations have joined forces to assist the Kaza partner states in protecting the region’s globally significant wildlife populations, counter the effects of climate change, safeguard, sustainably harness shared resources across borders, and greatly enhance the well-being of their local communities.

Kaza-TFCA is a partnership between Namibia, Botswana, Angola, Zambia and Zimbabwe which combines 36 national parks, game reserves, community forests, conservancies and game management areas into the world’s greatest conservation area.

“The five-year Dream Fund project augments support already provided to Kaza by the German ministry for economic cooperation through KfW and other funders, and brings the Kaza partner states one step closer to successfully leveraging conservation as the main economic driver of the region, resulting in thriving landscapes for people and wildlife,” reads the statement.

It says this was also aligned with the Kaza-TFCA vision to establish a world-class transfrontier conservation area and tourism designation in the Okavango and Zambezi river basins within the context of sustainable development.

Kaza-TFCA secretariat executive director Nyambe Nyambe was quoted in the statement as saying the organisation was excited to receive such good news.

He said Kaza is firmly anchored on the spirit of partnership and the collaboration between the three conservation non-governmental organisations and Kaza partner states in securing this support is testimony to this.

“On behalf of all the partners, the Kaza secretariat extends our sincerest gratitude to the players of the Dutch Postcode Lottery, who have provided the catalyst for partnerships that will generate real impacts for people and conservation within the Kaza landscape,” said Nyambe.
