N$3 000 fine or 2 years in jail for abortion

AN 18 year-old girl from the Oshoopala informal settlement at Oshakati was found guilty of illegal abortion in the Oshakati Magistrate’s Court yesterday and sentenced to a fine of N$3 000 or a jail term of two years.

Gloria Iiyambo was arrested on Saturday for alleged illegal abortion. According to the Oshana Police Liaison Officer, Constable Jonas Matheus, Iiyambo had been pregnant for four months and had tried to abort the foetus using a stick.She harmed herself in the process and was taken to Oshakati State Hospital, where it was discovered that she tried to perform an abortion.While being treated, the embryo came out, and the Police were called.She was arrested, but remained in the hospital till Sunday.She was charged with a case of abortion.She pleaded guilty when she appeared in the Oshakati Magistrate’s Court yesterday morning, and Magistrate Helena Ekandjo fined her N$3 000 or two years in jail.According to the Oshana Police Liaison Officer, Constable Jonas Matheus, Iiyambo had been pregnant for four months and had tried to abort the foetus using a stick.
