Early childhood education in the Hardap region received a major boost this week following the official handover of the new N$1.2 million Northside Early Childhood Development Model Centre at Northside Primary School on Tuesday.
The facility was built through a joint initiative between the Mobile Telecommunications Limited (MTC) and Development Workshop Namibia (DWN). It features two fully equipped classrooms with attached storerooms and dedicated ablution facilities.
Designed to serve as a model learning environment for young children, the facility focuses on play-based development, early numeracy, storytelling, science, creative arts and outdoor activity areas tailored for children of all learning abilities.
The centre marks the second facility established under the MTC-DWN partnership, following the completion of a similar model centre at Oshakati in 2024.
Speaking at the official handover ceremony on 20 October, MTC’s chief brand, marketing, communications and sustainability officer, Tim Ekandjo, called on leaders to focus on direct community delivery.
“Children from different backgrounds look to leadership with hope, placing a responsibility on those in positions of influence to deliver meaningful change,” Ekandjo said. “I urge that, as leaders, we put service to communities ahead of titles, political differences and personal interests.”
He encouraged development organisations to expand similar projects across the country, while urging young pupils to embrace the opportunities provided to build a strong foundation for their future.
DWN executive director Ester Veiko has commended MTC for its ongoing support towards early childhood education infrastructure in the country. She notes that DWN will provide continuous teacher training, coaching and mentorship at the site, while Northside Primary School assumes daily operational management of the facility.
Hardap governor Rian McNab welcomes the investment in the region, emphasising the role of early learning in developing confidence, social interaction and language skills in young children. He calls on the local school community to safeguard and maintain the infrastructure for future generations.
