My traditional leaders are driving ‘skoro-skoro’ cars – Gaseb

Council of Traditional Leaders chairperson Immanuel Gaseb says they are forced to attend meetings and serve their communities using skoro-skoro (old) cars.

He says this is because the government has neglected traditional leaders.

Gaseb was speaking during a parliamentary standing committee meeting on urban and rural development in Windhoek on Wednesday.

Committee chairperson Elifas Dingara at the meeting said the consultation aims to address burning issues raised by traditional leaders, including concerns about the land bill.

“Since Jerry Ekandjo’s time when he made it possible for us to have vehicles, my leaders drive in these skoro-skoro cars because the vehicles are old. Some go to meetings in donkey carts and taxis, and yet you hear the government calling us their esteemed leaders.

“What leaders, if this is how we are being treated,” Gaseb said.

Traditional leaders last received new vehicles from the government around 2009, he said.

A large fleet of 4×4 double cab bakkies was distributed to all 51 traditional authorities (now 53) between 2009 and 2016.
