Music for cheetahs

AFRICA’s most endangered big cat, the cheetah, stands to benefit from the power of music with a partnership between Namibia’s Cheetah Conservation Fund (CCF) and members of the Swedish band Slowmo.

The band has pledged to donate half of the revenue from Internet downloads of their hit single ‘From A Window’ to the CCF. The acoustic track gained great popularity in the United States, Japan, France and Sweden when it was released last year. The single is listed on digital music stores such as Apple’s iTunes, MSN Music, Rhapsody and Music Net.Direct links are also available at www.cheetah.org, http://djcoa.libsyn.com and www.slow-b.com .The concept of the Downloads for Dollars programme followed the trail of devastation left by Hurricane Katrina in the US last year, when many musicians reacted by donating the proceeds from album sales to the victims. The programme continues to link independent musicians with established non-profit organisations towards mutual gain: the artists receive the necessary recognition and a viable outlet to sell their music, while the organisations continuously earn funds to realise their goals.
