The WBO title defence between Martin ‘Alligator’ Mukungu and South African challenger Siphosethu Mvula has been postponed to 21 November at Rundu.
MTC Sunshine Boxing Academy founder Nestor Tobias has confirmed the postponement.
Tobias says the fight is expected to produce fireworks, especially from Mukungu, who will defend his title on home soil. The bout is expected to attract a huge following from residents of Rundu and surrounding areas.
“The postponement also gives Mukungu ample time to thoroughly prepare for the fight and give Rundu’s inhabitants a worthwhile bout to watch.”
The fight will feature a co-main bout between Fillipus ‘Energy’ Nghitumbwa and South African Sonjica Ayabonga.
However, the main fight of the evening will be headlined by Mateus ‘The Beast’ Heita, who will trade blows with South African Ismael Kadri.
The bill will also feature Harry Simon Jr taking on Ghanaian Habib Giwa for the IBF Africa title.
“Our primary objective is to improve our fighters’ world ratings and secure opportunities for them to compete for world titles.
“MTC Sunshine Academy has a rich history of producing world champions through this platform, and we remain committed to that legacy for the Namibian nation.”
Tobias says that by bringing the event to Rundu, they aim to show young people in the Kavango East region that they, too, can follow in Mukungu’s footsteps and achieve greatness.
“Building on the spirit of national unity, this event transcends sport. It is an occasion to honour a man who has put Namibia on the world map. To celebrate our rich Namibian heritage, the night will feature exciting action of world-class boxing, musical performances from top local artists, pageantry, and cultural displays.”
Tobias says boxing serves as a vital engine for the Namibian economy.
“This event will stimulate multiple sectors including hospitality, catering, marketing, and the medical field hiring doctors and physiotherapists, as well as the beauty and fitness industries.
“We view boxing as a tool for youth empowerment. It provides a pathway for young individuals from challenging backgrounds to build a better future for themselves and their families,” Tobias says.
He says with the potential to reach a global audience of millions through broadcast and digital platforms, they are putting Namibia’s talent and tourism potential on a global scale.
“In recognition of an event of this magnitude, the MTC Sunshine Academy is proud to announce the appointment of professor Joseph Diescho as the patron of this event.
“His involvement adds immense value and contributes to the success of the anticipated event,” Tobias says.
The event is organised in partnership with the Kavango Regional Council.
“This ‘Boxing Bonanza’ is more than just a title defence. It is a celebration of the first and only championship to have an international champion to hail from the Kavango East region.
“Our objective and mission is solid and results-driven. And that is to produce both continental and world boxing champions to make the ‘Land of the Brave’ proud.”
The evening will showcase a packed undercard featuring some of Namibia’s most elite, world-rated talent and promising prospects. Fighters in action will include Paulinus “Jon Jon” Ndjolonimu and potential good rated fighters.
