MPs to conduct oversight visits during parliamentary recess

Members of parliament (MPs) will continue carrying out oversight visits and constituency engagements during the National Assembly recess, despite the House suspending sittings from 10 July to 1 September.

National Assembly spokesperson Sacky Kadhikwa says the recess should not be interpreted as a break from parliamentary duties.

“During the recess period, MPs will continue to carry out constituency engagements, oversight visits and other parliamentary responsibilities in accordance with their constitutional and statutory obligations,” he says.

Kadhikwa encourages members of the public and stakeholders to take note of the recess period and the commencement of the fourth session on 1 September.

He says the third session of the National Assembly considered and deliberated on a wide range of matters of national importance, including bills, petitions and motions.

According to Kadhikwa, the proceedings demonstrated parliament’s continued commitment to its constitutional mandate by promoting accountability, transparency and responsive governance while advancing the socio-economic interests and aspirations of the Namibian people.

The session concluded with the National Assembly approving the nomination of Bryan Eiseb as the next director general of the Anti-Corruption Commission.

However, the proposed appointment of Gerson Sindano as chairperson of the Electoral Commission of Namibia, together with commissioners Emmerentia Leonard and Julieta Ferreira, remains unresolved following objections from opposition parties.
