Swapo member of parliament James Uerikua’s death, sudden and tragic, has left a wound that words can scarcely heal. And as we mourn him, we also hold in our prayers his beloved family – his wife, who is fighting for recovery, and his children, who now carry both pain and courage in equal measure. My heart breaks even more for the son we have lost alongside him. This is grief that touches not only a family, but an entire nation.
Uerikua was a rare leader. Charismatic, deeply intelligent, and exceptionally articulate – he had a command of the English language that could make even native English speakers pause in admiration. But beyond his brilliance, it was his humility that defined him. He was kind, generous, and deeply human, and fun to be around.
In the chamber, we shared more than just a seat and a desk – we shared ideas, convictions, and a commitment to serve our people. And beyond these walls, we shared a simple but meaningful tradition: every second Thursday after parliament, we would sit together over a glass of red wine, reflecting on the state of our nation and debating pathways to economic renewal. Those moments, filled with laughter, insight, and honest exchange, are now memories I would carry for the rest of my life. James will always say, we need to use “ruthless aggression” if we want to achieve economic emancipation for our people.
Uerikua was not just a participant in national discourse – he was a force within it. He understood the complexities of our economic future, the shifting tides of geopolitics, and the vital role of agriculture in sustaining our people. He spoke not only for the powerful, but for the voiceless, the overlooked, and the ordinary Namibian who depends on leadership that listens and acts.
