Moses makes Asian connection

IMMANUEL ‘African Connection’ Moses ticked off another accomplishment after being appointed the Indian Professional Boxing Association’s global matchmaker.

His role is an integral part of the East Asian nation’s professional boxing boom amplified by the soon-to-be launched India Pro Boxing League which will bring together boxers from across the globe, much like the money-spinning Indian Premier League cricket venture.

The upcoming league format championship will see eight teams battling for the title in five weeks of action. The championship will offer a total of six titles for as many weight categories.

“We are pleased to confirm your appointment as ‘Global Matchmaker’ for Pro Boxing League and other properties of IPBA, effective 20 June 2017,” IPBA president Shahe Ali said in his appointment letter to Moses.

The appointment is for one year, and is renewable. It came about through one of Moses’ regular trips to international boxing gatherings abroad last year, where he met his Indian associates.

“It is good to have you on board as part of the IPBA family. A person with your experience and insight would be the perfect person to help us to promote and develop the ecosystem of the sport in India and globally,” said Ali.

In an interview with The Namibian Sport after a trip to the United States of America where he mingled with some of world boxing’s biggest personalities at a convention, Moses reiterated his desire to take his match-making globally.

The younger brother of former WBA lightweight world champion Paulus ‘The Himan’ Moses, the ambitious Immanuel is on a mission to become world-renowned, just like his sibling.

“I am happy to help put Namibian boxing on the world map. It is something that I have been working on for a long time. It’s a great opportunity for me and for the country. This is not the limit for me; I want to keep learning more about the sport and see how I can use what I have learnt outside back home,” said Moses, who is also a trainer for the MTC Sunshine Boxing and Fitness Academy.

The 34-year-old is no stranger to aligning with renowned establishments in the sport. He has ties to five-division world champion Floyd Mayweather Jr’s gym, where he has a good rapport with legendary trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr.

His latest undertaking will widen his connections in the elite ranks.

“I will be working with promoters from all over the world to get their boxers to be part of the Pro League. This means Namibian promoters who want their boxers in this competition must come through me. It is a great opportunity for Namibian boxers to get exposure and get titles. The Pro League is working with the major sanctioning bodies, so this can improve boxers’ world ratings as well,” he enthused.
