WIDESPREAD rain can be expected in central and northern Namibia this weekend, the Windhoek weather bureau says.
Weatherman Simon Dirkse says from Sunday the rain will move to the South. Rundu in the Kavango Region reported 18,3 millimetres of rain yesterday morning, while Outjo measured 15,4 mm, Katima Mulilo 11,4 mm, Otjiwarongo 13,2 mm, Grootfontein 6,8 mm and Nkurenkuru 4 mm.The country’s main dams are still full.According to NamWater’s latest dam bulletin, the Von Bach Dam near Okahandja is now 99 per cent full compared to only 38,9 per cent at the same time last year. The Naute Dam near Keetmanshoop is 99,6 per cent full and Gobabis’s Daan and Tilda Viljoen dams are 103,8 per cent and 96,4 per cent full respectively. The level of the Hardap Dam at Mariental is being kept at a relatively low 71 per cent in an effort to prevent flooding. The adjacent irrigation scheme and half the town of Mariental were flooded at the end of February after heavy rains raised the dam level dangerously high, prompting NamWater to open the sluice gates.Windhoek’s smaller Avis and Goreangab dams are now 116,5 per cent and 110,5 per cent full respectively.Rundu in the Kavango Region reported 18,3 millimetres of rain yesterday morning, while Outjo measured 15,4 mm, Katima Mulilo 11,4 mm, Otjiwarongo 13,2 mm, Grootfontein 6,8 mm and Nkurenkuru 4 mm.The country’s main dams are still full.According to NamWater’s latest dam bulletin, the Von Bach Dam near Okahandja is now 99 per cent full compared to only 38,9 per cent at the same time last year. The adjacent irrigation scheme and half the town of Mariental were flooded at the end of February after heavy rains raised the dam level dangerously high, prompting NamWater to open the sluice gates.Windhoek’s smaller Avis and Goreangab dams are now 116,5 per cent and 110,5 per cent full respectively.
