The Donkey Welfare organisation has donated 1 000 fluorescent ear tags to the Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA) Fund.
These ear tags glow in the dark and make donkeys more visible at night. There are over 200 000 donkeys in Namibia and many are killed every year in road accidents. These humble beasts of burden account for over a quarter of all road accidents involving animals. This is chiefly because they enjoy sleeping on warm tarmac, which cools down slower at night than the soil around it.Fitting them with reflective ear tags makes it easier for car drivers to see them in time to take evasive action.Towards the end of last year, 100 donkeys were tagged in Rehoboth and a further 250 in the Oshakati area. The 1 000 ear tags donated to the MVA Fund are enough for 500 donkeys in the Omusati and Ohangwena regions. The tags have been improved, with the reflective material welded onto the tag so that it cannot be removed.
