‘Money Heist’, also known as ‘El Casa De Papel’ is the new Netflix series taking the world by storm.
The year is unknown, but we’re flung into the heart of Spain. The Royal Mint of Spain, the national coinage and stamp factory based in Madrid, is under siege. Police surround the area, no one goes in or out.
Our protagonist and narrator is Tokyo aka Silene Oliveira, a professional thief who’s got nothing to lose, except love. She’s in it to win it: A life where she can lie naked on a yacht with the love of her life. After all, millions of euros are at stake. She’s an independent woman with a tough-as-nails attitude, but her recklessness often gets into the way of her freedom.
Her weakness is the gullible hacker Rio, who would follow Tokyo to hell and back. Almost 10 years younger than his lady love, his heart is in the right place, but this relationship almost costs him his life when he carelessly tries to save Tokyo. He is easily swayed by family members, especially when his parents condemn his actions. This gives leeway for other members of the crew to overpower him, but as a viewer, you can’t help but have a soft spot for this tech genius.
Moscow and Denver are a father and son combo who are a part of the heist because a life of crime is all they know. Moscow is a former miner whose skill underground is unmatched, while Denver admires from behind. As episodes fly by, viewers can’t help but get more attached to the duo as they share their dreams, desires and daring pasts. Denver, however, falls in love with a hostage, and this causes tension within the crew. Could it be Stockholm syndrome or can love truly blossom from within the walls of a building in dire circumstances?
One of the prominent figures in the show is Nairobi, an incredibly intelligent forger who can spot a fake note from kilometres away. Often taking up the role as the leader when others get in her way, she refuses to let anyone or anything stop her finding her son again. Cross her, and the whole team falls apart.
She often butts heads with the self-proclaimed narcissist Berlin, a cunning and conniving thief who loves to put on a show and be behind the steering wheel of the robbery. As cold as his personality is, you have to admire his punchy one-liners. His knack for sticking to the plan no matter what happens within the team often leads him into trouble, but admittedly saves the lives of others.
Then there’s Helsinki and Oslo, cousins and soldiers who have stuck together through thick and thin. Known as the muscles of the heist team, their presence shakes tables.
The Professor is the mastermind behind this team of thieves because an enticing deal lures them in: Steal 2,4 billion euros and live like millionaires until death – if you can escape. Rooting for the crew on the outside, but mistakenly falling in love with the lead detective of the case, Raquel, you’ll never guess what’s on The Professor’s mind or see the ending coming.
The stellar cast includes Úrsula Corberó, Itziar Ituño, Álvaro Morte, Pedro Alonso and more. It has been confirmed that season four is on the way, but for now, watch all three parts of ‘Money Heist’ on Netflix.
