Gone are the days when designers made beautiful creations for mostly women. Today more creatives are venturing into uncharted territory by designing interesting pieces which speak to men who love to express themselves and stand out.
MN Creations, a Namibian menswear clothing line, is certainly one of them. The label held its official launch for their ready-to-wear collection, which consisted of athleisure, sleepwear and men’s underwear, over the weekend in Windhoek.
Fabrics such as cotton, lace and mesh make up the collection in shades of black, white and grey, with subtle touches of mauve and blue.
“I selected these fabrics because I wanted the collection to bring a lot of comfort and these fabrics are also very stylish. The items are suitable for both the young man and older man. I would encourage people to purchase our products as they’re locally sourced for the Namibian man,” Matheus Nalimanguluke Erastus, the owner and designer of MN Creations, said.
Erastus expressed excitement about the growth of the Namibian fashion sector. “It is surely growing slowly. It makes me happy to see many people are starting to appreciate the art. What I loved the most about the new collection was the fact that it was inspired by the different personalities around me. I however hated the fact we are so limited when it comes to resources in terms of fabric. The collection is very personal and close to my heart,” he said.
MN Creations was formed 11 years ago in Erastus’ parents’ living room, initially as a hobby.
“I realised that my love for fashion was greater than anything else and I could not stay away. Since then it has grown immensely beyond my own expectations. People love what I do and I am so thankful.”
Growing up, Erastus was always interested in the fashion industry, but was reluctant to follow that path due to perceptions that it was a woman’s career. He soon realised that great fashion knows no gender and began to follow his dreams.
“If your passion is there, why not do it? The one thing that I love about my job is that every garment has its own story to tell and that it will bring joy to the person who is to wear it,” he said.
The 29-year-old says making it in the industry is not easy as passion alone is not enough. Success requires a lot of hard work and perseverance. His motto in life has always been that with a little bit of faith you can surely make it.
“I am where I am today because of my willingness to learn from the next person and putting in a lot of hard work. I am still growing,” Erastus said.
One thing that Erastus always makes time for is spending time with family, as he believes it is important to make time for his people.
“I had my sister who always challenged my abilities and was probably my best cheerleader. In the fashion industry I have so many local designers that inspire me a lot. I admire their level of creativity and passion for the trade. We at MN Creations are busy with so many good things coming out soon and possibly collaborations as well,” Erastus said.
