Miss ‘The Emoji Movie’

LOOK, emojis are life but we don’t need a whole movie about them. Especially one featuring a ‘loser lounge’ for the least used emojis and the eggplant is in there like we aren’t all grown.

Cunningly titled ‘The Emoji Movie’ (2017) and starring TJ Miller, James Corden, Anna Faris and Maya Rudolph, this 3D computer animated comedy takes place almost entirely inside a teenage boy’s smartphone where emojis live a one-note life based on their particular function.

Smileys smile. Crying faces cry and meh emojis meh. Except one named Gene who’s about to be deleted as a malfunction for having some depth to his personality. Totally devoid of emojis’ Japanese origins, the film comes in thin and fast in a tale about embracing one’s individuality and range of emotions.

If it sounds like a stretch that’s because it’s a stretch.

Playing like a budget ‘Inside Out’ (2015) and tossing out lines like “great. Emojis. I thought the conversation just got dumber”, the movie attempts some mild social commentary while pitching for apps like YouTube, Just Dance Now and Spotify.

Also featuring the voice talents of Rob Riggle, Christina Aguilera, Sofia Vergara, Sean Hays and Patrick Stewart, ‘The Emoji Movie’ wins in its casting of real life meh king and queen Steven Wright and Jennifer Coolidge as Gene’s underwhelmed parents but that’s where the victory ends.

See this when it hits television, if at all, and have the meh emoji on standby for your social media reviews.
