MISS Palm Beach, one of the December holiday highlights at the coast, will not be held this year, breaking a tradition of about 30 years, mainly because of the development of the new Strand Hotel.
There were indications that the event would be held at Mile 4 instead, and the Swakopmund Town Council gave its approval to allow Namibia Beverages, the main sponsors, to stage the event there this year, but the company eventually decided against it.
‘The event has become synonymous with Palm Beach at the Mole in Swakopmund, and the location lent itself to a huge number of holidaymakers streaming to witness this yearly event.
‘Now with the building works going on at the Mole, it was felt that no other venue would do justice to the event that got its name from Palm Beach,’ Namibia Beverages Managing Director Frik Oosthuizen told The Namibian.
‘Namibia Beverages will endeavour to continue with the event once the Mole becomes available again in the years to follow,’ Oosthuizen said.
