Miss NGO Namibia takes over Miss World licence

NEW ERA … Former Miss Namibia Selma Kamanya will now represent the country at Miss World in India under the newly established Miss World Namibia organisation.

Namibia will make a bold return to the Miss World stage next month, with former Miss Namibia 2018, Selma Kamanya, representing the country in India.

But the real headline is who is making it happen.

The Miss World licence is now under new management – the Miss NGO Namibia organisation. This marks a shift from the previous licence holders, the Miss Namibia Organisation, who had managed it for several years.

National director of Miss NGO Namibia Marco Coetzee says taking over the licence is a strategic move.

“We sought the Miss World licence with the ambition to increase Namibia’s international profile,” Coetzee says. “Miss World’s theme, ‘Beauty With a Purpose’, aligns perfectly with our vision of empowering young women to be agents for change.”

He adds that securing the licence involved a rigorous application process.

“We had to show we were credible, capable and committed to Miss World’s values. This is not just about beauty, it’s about creating a difference.”

Instead of a traditional pageant, the new licence holders selected Kamanya through an internal process.

“Kamanya was chosen from a shortlist of nominees. Her background in economics, work in real estate, and dedication to mental health activism made her an ideal fit,” Coetzee says.

Kamanya has grown into a respected voice for social issues, especially youth mental health, women empowerment and cyberbullying. Her activism began during national suicide prevention campaigns, making her a relatable figure for many young Namibians.

Speaking on her appointment, Kamanya says: “I was touched to tears. This is not only a humbling experience but a very meaningful one for me. I’m willing to drive sustainable change at home and abroad.”

She is currently pursuing a degree at the Namibia University of Science and Technology while working as a real estate agent.

Coetzee calls on Namibians to rally behind her.

“This is not Kamanya’s moment, it’s Namibia’s moment. Let’s stand behind her as she carries our values and vision to the world.”

The 72nd Miss World pageant will take place in Telangana, India, from 7 to 31 May.
