Ministry cautions staff ahead of start to school year

Erastus Haitengela

The Ministry of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sport, Arts and Culture reminds educators that it is illegal to accept bribes in exchange for pupil admissions.

“The education ministry issues a categorical instruction to all staff members against the solicitation or acceptance of any money, gifts or favours in exchange for pupil admission,” education ministry executive director Erastus Haitengela says in a statement.

Education is a constitutional right and admission to schools must be governed by the approved procedures, Haitengela says.

He reminds parents that school fees are prohibited at state schools and that there are no admission charges. Moreover, pupils may not be refused admission if a parent is unable to contribute to the school development fund.

“We must work together to ensure that the placement of the Namibian child is determined by policy and fairness, not by unlawful financial influence,” Haitengela adds.
