Mining Youth Week Launched

On Friday, 14 July, Namibia’s first Mining Youth Week was launched at Oranjemund with the theme ‘Together We Are One’.

A mining youth gala dinner took place in the beautiful town of Oranjemund at the Recreational Club earlier in the year. It was a fundraising gala and the Mining Youth Week committee managed to raise N$27 350 through pledges.

The Mining Youth Week aims to be an annual non-profit event and was established by the youth of the Oranjemund constituency on 2 February.

The gala dinner’s main speaker was deputy minister of Mines and Energy, Kornelia Shilunga and the event was officiated by Mandela Kapere, head of the National Youth Council.

Motivated by Daisry Mathias, advisor to the president regarding youth matters and enterprise development, Shilunga said: “I wish to take this opportunity to appeal to the youth to dedicate themselves to studying hard and keep away social evils that are corrupting our society. Our youth are undoubtedly our leaders for tomorrow, but they must embrace education and hard work to achieve the desired objectives and contribute to social-economic development and defeat abject poverty in our midst. I remind the youth that education is the greatest equaliser”.

The distinguished guests together with the youth were entertained by Namibian artists, Ann Singer and Neslow.

The main event is aimed at contributing towards the development of our country through arts, culture and sports development and together executing short and long term youth projects. We plan to reward bursaries for outgoing secondary school students and also to create networking opportunities at the Mining Youth Week for people in mining.

It is also an opportunity for CME’s in the mining sector to showcase their businesses at the event. It is scheduled to take place in September in the towns of Oranjemund and Rosh Pinah.

Everyone in the mining industry and all regions, especially the youth are invited to attend.
