Milka Mungunda steps down from Fishcor board

Milka Mungunda

The National Fishing Corporation of Namibia (Fishcor) board chairperson, Milka Mungunda, has resigned.

Her resignation was confirmed by Fishcor chief executive Clive Gawanab yesterday.

“I can confirm that she handed her resignation letter to the minister but I’m not privileged to the particulars,” he said.

According to Gawanab, Mungunda handed in her letter of resignation to minister of agriculture, fisheries, water and land reform Inge Zaamwani-Kamwi on 27 June due to personal reasons.

The board’s term ends in October.

Gawanab also dismissed claims of tension within the board, saying there is no animosity between board members and the chairperson.

“There is no animosity among board members and the chairperson. She left for personal reasons known only to her and minister Inge Zaamwani-Kamwi,” he said.

Mungunda, who is also the Social Security Commission chief executive, was appointed as a temporary Fishcor board chairperson in 2020 after Fishcor was implicated in the Fishrot saga in 2019.

Her role is currently being filled on an interim basis by the deputy chairperson, Saul Kahuika, until the board appoints a permanent replacement.

Mungunda was appointed alongside former magistrate Ruth Herunga, former Namibian Competition Commission chief executive Mihe Gaomab II and Penny Hiwilepo-van Hal.
