Memorable goal by Aussie Sim beats Chiefs

JOHANNESBURG – Australian Matthew Sim created and scored the goal that enabled Cape Town City to upset Kaizer Chiefs 1-0 this weekend in a South African Top 8 Cup quarter-final.

Sim cleared a corner with his head and as the ball moved down the right flank, he raced forward on the other side of the Cape Town Stadium pitch.

Raising his arm to signal he was unmarked, the former Western Sydney Wanderers midfielder-cum-defender received a deep cross just inside the box.

And as Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune darted off his line to attempt a block, Sim calmly planted the ball into the far corner of the net.

Cape Town City are newcomers to top-flight South African football having bought the Mpumalanga Black Aces franchise during the close season.

Sim set up one of the goals that defeated Polokwane City 2-0 last Tuesday in the opening round of the league and followed up with the match-winner against favoured Chiefs.

The quarter-finals brought no joy either for Orlando Pirates who, like Chiefs, enjoy huge support that extends to neighbouring countries.

Wits punished two blunders by Equatorial Guinea goalkeeper Felipe Ovono to beat Pirates 2-1 in Johannesburg with centre-backs Buhle Mkhwanazi and Thulani Hlatshwayo the scorers.

Oupa Manyisa had given the Buccaneers the lead from the penalty spot before a sell-out crowd at Milpark Stadium.

CAF Champions League semi-finalists Mamelodi Sundowns began their domestic season with a 3-1 triumph over SuperSport United in a lively Pretoria derby.

The tie was in the balance until the 80th minute when closely marked Zimbabwean Khama Billiat found space to steer the ball past goalkeeper Ronwen Williams.

An eight million rand ($560,000, 500,000 euros) winners-take-all prize is at stake in the Top 8 Cup, which features the top eight finishers in the previous league season. – Nampa-AFP
