Meat Board of Namibia to be renamed

Calle Schlettwein

Agriculture minister Calle Schlettwein on Tuesday tabled amendments to the Meat Industry Act of 1981, which include the renaming of the Meat Board of Namibia.

The legislation proposes the meat board to be called the Livestock and Livestock Products Board of Namibia.

Schlettwein said this is “in resonance with the expanded mandate which extends from meat products to livestock and livestock products, including poultry and its related products”.

Meanwhile, upon promulgation, the Meat Industry Act will be expanded and renamed the Livestock and Livestock Products Act, the minister said.

“The inclusion of poultry, dairy and related products in the livestock and livestock products bill gives powers to the meat board to regulate those sub-sectors to the benefit of local producers and consumers,” said Schlettwein.

He added that this legislative change implies the repeal of Control of the Import and Export of Dairy Products and Dairy Product Substitutes Act of 1986.

“The Meat Board of Namibia has already established capacity, competence, and experience. Accordingly, the new Livestock and Livestock Products Board of Namibia will leverage on its economies of scale to employ incremental resources to facilitate the inclusion and smooth transition of dairy and poultry as controlled products of the livestock and livestock products bill,” he said.
