Mbumba visits Hylron Oshivela project

President Nangolo Mbumba on Thursday visited the Hylron Oshivela Project in the Erongo region, accompanied by the Minister of Mines and Energy, Tom Alweendo and Erongo governor, Neville Andre Itope.

The visit was part of Mbumba’s official visit to the region. The Hylron Oshivela Project is set to produce Namibia’s first-ever green industrial product, iron ore. Located at Arandis, the project is set for completion in a few days, according to the spokesperson of the Namibia Green Hydrogen Programme, Jona Musheko.

HyIron Oshivela will be the world’s first to utilise green hydrogen in processing iron oxide to produce direct reduced iron (DRI), a key input in sustainable steel manufacturing.

“Construction of the facility commenced in 2024, and within six months, Hylron-Oshivela successfully installed 44 000 solar panels across 25 hectares, generating 25 MW of renewable energy. During Phase I, the project engaged over 60 Namibian small and medium enterprises and provided employment opportunities for more than 400 Namibians,” Musheko said in a statement.

Hylron Oshivela has secured its first offtake agreement to supply 200 000 tons of DRI to a global steel manufacturer, he said.

“This milestone underscores Namibia’s commitment to leveraging its abundant renewable resources for sustainable economic growth and industrialisation,” Musheko noted.
