Matricide suspect applies for bail

WHAT was supposed to be an opportunity for Natangwe Iipinge Ngatjizeko to enter a plea on charges that he murdered his mother in December turned into the prelude to a bail application in the Katutura Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

After entering the dock, the 27-year-old Ngatjizeko told Magistrate Welmarie Van Rooi that he had applied for legal representation and was applying for bail. Upon hearing this, the Magistrate postponed the case to May 9 for Ngatjizeko’s bail application to be heard. He will remain in Police custody until then.Ngatjizeko was arrested on December 18, and was immediately taken to hospital to be treated for injuries that included cuts and burns to his hands.Police had started searching for him a day earlier, when his mother, Fenny Iipinge, was found dead in her living room in Katutura’s Shandumbala area. Her body was reportedly riddled with stab wounds, and she had also apparently been scalded with hot water. The neighbour went to investigate, but found the doors locked. He called the Police, who forced the door open. They found Iipinge lying on the living room floor.Iipinge (58) was a former personal assistant to Namibia’s former First Lady Kovambo Nujoma.Ngatjizeko is her son from a relationship with Trade and Industry Minister Immanuel Ngatjizeko.Upon hearing this, the Magistrate postponed the case to May 9 for Ngatjizeko’s bail application to be heard. They found Iipinge lying on the living room floor.
