The 21st Anniversary of Martti Ahtisaari Primary School, in Katutura, took place on 31 October and was a day worth attending as young and old gathered to celebrate what the day had to offer.
In 1997 the school was named after Martti Ahtisaari, a Finnish politician and tenth President of Finland, noted for his international peace work. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts on several continents in which he helped to resolve international conflicts.
Martti Ahtisaari also played a prominent role in resolving many conflicts in Namibia so the day focused on paying homage to a great statesman. Minister of Education David Namwandi who gave a keynote address said that it was a significant day, a day of celebration, a day of remembrance and a day of bringing honour to those who dedicated their time to the schools existence.
“Mr Ahtisaari’s heart beat warmly for the education of the Namibian child. He ensured that you, as a Namibian child, would forever receive quality education. He left a wealth of good deeds and behavioural patterns for you to follow and imitate. Nothing stops you from following in his footsteps. After all, education has no boundaries,” said Namwandi. He also further encouraged and appealed to pupils to set a good example in their community. “I want you to show the world that you are committed to your education. I want you to show all other Namibians that you are building a solid foundation of knowledge and skills. I want you to outshine all others in your studies, your sports activities and your cultural activities. If people see you anywhere, they should see that they are dealing with a leader, a champion,” he said.
