With the Hardap Dam’s water level now at 22.1%, there is some hope for the town’s water supply, Mariental mayor Cherien Kock said on Wednesday.
Namwater released this data in a dam bulletin on Monday.
“I can only express heartfelt gratitude, happiness, joy and confidence for the recent water level, because this water plays a vital role in sustaining our community,” said Kock.
She expressed relief on behalf of the Mariental community, saying the prolonged drought had left many feeling “helpless and unable to see a path forward”. She added that they hope for more rain, which would allow farmers to continue with their operations.
“Hopefully, we won’t have the same water issues we experienced last year here,” said Kock.
According to the dam bulletin, the water level stood at 14.8% a week ago and has risen to 22.1% due following sustained rain.
Community members of Mariental are optimistic about the current state of the dam.
Maria Boois, a local entrepreneur shared how the town’s agricultural sector would benefit from the available water.
“Last year the irrigation water supply tap was cut, and it was a struggle for the farmers. Many people lost their jobs, but now the farmers can carry on their farming activities and people can also start fishing,” Boois stated.
Another community member, Eltrute Muchuana, said the latest water level brought renewed hope.
“All that the people in the Hardap region can do, especially the inhabitants of Mariental, is to pray for more rain,” stated Muchuana.
