Mariental mayor in self-isolation

THE mayor of Mariental Billy Mensah has been placed in self-isolation at his farm in the Hardap region.

This came after it emerged that last weekend he had allegedly sneaked in and out of the Walvis Bay, which is epicentre of the Covid -19 pandemic.

Sources said the mayor had travelled to Walvis Bay for a business transaction via the Maltahohe gravel road.

The Namibian understands that after his return to Mariental, Mensah attended a council management meeting on Wednesday without disclosing his short visit to the Covid-19-hit coastal town.

Council insiders said that council workers are now in panic for fear of possible contracting the virus among themselves.

The council’s CEO, Paul Nghiwilepo, on Thursday confirmed the regional health director Yvonne Stephanus had ordered Mensah to self-isolate at his farm.

Nghiwilepo said he was waiting for further directives from the health directorate regarding isolation of council staff, who may have came in contact with Mensah when attended Wednesday’s council meeting.
