Marginalised youth to represent Namibia in Region 5 Youth Games

Players from marginalised communities will form part of the team representing Namibia at the African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region 5 Youth Games, scheduled to take place in Mozambique later this year.

Namibia Sports Commission (NSC) chief administrator Freddy Mwiya, during a press conference on the 2026 National Youth Games on Thursday, said the team was selected during marginalised community games last year.

The players will form part of those to be selected to represent Namibia.

“We want to give an opportunity to children from the marginalised community so that they can also become part and parcel of team Namibia,” he added, noting that children from marginalised communities tend to participate in community games without resulting in meaningful change.

The Ministry of Gender Equality and Child Welfare organises marginalised community games such as the Dr Libertine Amathila Sport Tournament and Otjozondjupa mass games, designed to integrate San, Ovatue, Ovatjimba, and Ovazemba communities.

Mwiya also noted that the 2026 National Youth Games in May will be held in a clustered format, which will group sport codes and regions into controllable competition centres.

This means regions are being grouped into a few central locations where matches will take place instead of each region hosting games separately.

The decision was taken to better manage a reduced budget, cutting funding for the National Youth Games and AUSC Region 5 participation from N$9 million to N$3 million.

“This approach will reduce travelling costs and accommodation, and also reduce the aspect of venue hires,” Mwiya said.
