Man in custody for assault of ex-girlfriend, car theft

A man (52) man is being held in custody on assault and motor vehicle theft charges in relation to his ex-girlfriend, after appearing in the Katima Mulilo Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

It is alleged that Nico Mutakali on Sunday drove off with the vehicle owned by his former girlfriend that was parked at a local shopping complex without her consent.

Furthermore, the complainant, in an attempt to stop him from taking her car, jumped onto the back of the vehicle; however, Mutakali did not stop, and in the process, the victim fell off the vehicle and sustained injuries.

The three charges are assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm, read with the Domestic Violence Act; use of vehicles without consent; and malicious damage to property.

He was denied bail as the victim opposed it, and the case was postponed to 14 May to allow him to secure legal representation.

He appeared before magistrate Beatrice Sibalatani.

Regional police spokesperson inspector Kisco Sitali told The Namibian yesterday that Mutakali was also in violation of the protection order that the complainant had against him.

He added that when the woman fell off the back of the car, she sustained a head injury and several bruises on her body.

“She has since received treatment and has been discharged. The vehicle was also recovered,” he said.
