ONLY one of eight young men arrested for robbing a tourist at Swakopmund in August was sentenced in the Magistrate’s Court at the coastal town last week.
Petrus Dausab (23) was found guilty of theft and was sentenced to N$3 000 or three years in prison of which N$2 000 or two years were suspended for five years. He immediately paid the fine.In August, Dausab approached an Italian tourist at a cash machine in Sam Nujoma Avenue just after dark and managed to steal the tourist’s Visa card.A Police officer on patrol in the vicinity immediately chased after him and he and the seven others were were subsequently arrested.The theft charge against the other seven were withdrawn.They are Stefanus Smith (26), Bartolomeus Kooper (28), Reinhold Gariseb (25), Martin Shitikola (21), Andreas Ujava (23), Hans Hikuam (22) and Chrisley Mpahleni (22).The eight were released on N$800 bail in August last year, except for Mpahleni who paid N$3 000.It was his second arrest in a month.In the first case he is accused of robbing an art teacher from Windhoek at a Swakopmund bank machine in the centre of town on July 18.He paid N$1 000 bail for the first charge.He immediately paid the fine.
