Man facing murder charge denied bail

A THIRTY-SIX-year-old man facing a charge of murder was denied bail during his first appearance in the Katima Mulilo Magistrate’;s Court on Monday.

Zundamo Kabila allegedly shot and killed Falali Mahoto (26) on Friday at the Bezi River bar along the Zambezi River.

The case was postponed to 6 December 2018 for further investigations and to allow Kabila, who is also facing a charge of attempted murder, to get legal representation.

Prosecutor Astrid Hewicke said Kabila should be denied bail because he is facing serious charges, that the investigations into the case are still in their infancy, and because he might interfere with witnesses.

The state is alleging that at around 21h30 at Bezi River bar on 5 October, an argument broke out between Kabila and his girlfriend, Kahimbi Mahoto, and Kabila wanted to assault her. However, the deceased did not like the fact that Kabila wanted to assault his cousin, and came to her rescue.

Kabila then allegedly took out a pistol from his vehicle and shot Falali Mahoto in the chest, and he died on the spot. Kabila allegedly also shot his girlfriend in the right arm, and then fled from the scene.

The police and an ambulance were summoned to the scene, and rushed Kahimbi Mahoto to the Katima Mulilo State Hospital for treatment. Kabila was arrested around 03h00 on Saturday morning at the Kalumba village.

He appeared before magistrate Boyd Namushinda.
